Common Bike Accident Causes

There are a wide array of factors that can contribute to a cycling accident on the road, such as:

  • Driving under the influence

  • Reckless driving

  • Texting while driving

  • Distracted Drivers

  • Running a red light or stop sign

  • Tuning the radio

  • Speeding

  • Failing to obey a traffic control device

  • Making an illegal turn

Necessary Bicycle Equipment & Passengers

A bicycle should not carry more people at one time than the number it is equipped for. For example, an adult cyclist can transport a child in a sling or backpack, child seat, or trailer engineered specifically for children. Each bicycle needs to have brakes installed that allow the rider to stop within 25 feet from a speed of 10 mph on level, dry, clean pavement.

Proper Lighting Equipment

If you are operating a bicycle between sunset and sunrise, the bicycle must be equipped with a lamp on the front with a white light visible from 500 feet to the front and a red reflector and lamp on the rear with a red light that is visible from 600 feet to the rear.

Wear Your Helmet

Bicycle helmets are required by federal law to meet the standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. A bicycle rider or passenger under 16 is required to wear a properly fitted and secured bicycle helmet that meets the national standard.

Passing A Vehicle

A motorist overtaking any non-motorized vehicle must pass it at a safe distance of not less than three feet between the motorized vehicle and the non-motorized vehicle.
